Induction cooktops: how to cook rice perfectly?
In India, rice is a staple diet no matter which region you are from. Being one of the most versatile dishes, it can be cooked as a main dish, appetiser, and even a dessert. You can use rice to make yummy rice balls, pulao, biryani, and kheer. To make rice items at home, it takes time and effort. However, with an induction cooktop you can make a host of rice dishes at home in a jiffy.
When you cook rice on a gas stove, you need a watchful eye to keep the rice from burning or undercooking. With induction cooktops, you don’t have to worry about that because they come with a preset menu and timer.
Here are some simple steps that will help you cook rice using an induction cooktop:
- Wash and rinse the rice to clean it thoroughly: If you are using long-grained rice like basmati or brown rice, presoak them for at least an hour. Presoaking reduces cooking time. However, short-grained rice does not require presoaking.
- Cooking in a pressure cooker: To make plain rice in a pressure cooker on an induction cooktop, for one bowl of rice take two bowls of water. Put the lid and whistle on. Choose the preset menu so that the induction stops the cooking process after the set time. Once the induction cooker shuts off, leave the rice for 10 mins. Open the pressure cooker and serve the rice hot.
- Cooking in a pot: When cooking rice in a pot on an induction cooktop, make sure to use it with a heavy bottom. This way the rice won’t stick to the bottom. For one bowl of rice, take three bowls of water. For pre-soaked rice, for every one bowl of rice, take two bowls of water. If you have an induction cooker with a preset menu, then choose the rice option. Don’t stir the rice otherwise it will become lumpy. The appliance will stop transferring heat once the timer goes off.
